Fourth annual Brandon Sprewer Classic
47 Special Olympics teams to compete at Milw. Vincent
Friday, February 05, 2010 - 3:42 AM
Judy Steffes

MILWAUKEE – The 4th Annual Brandon Sprewer Basketball Classic set for Feb. 6 and 7 at Milwaukee Vincent High School.

Sprewer was a 22-year-old Milwaukee area Special Olympian shot in the stomach September 5, 2006 on his way from his job at a grocery store to his grandparents' home.

Forty-seven Special Olympics basketball teams from throughout Wisconsin will compete during the two-day event. Admission is free and open to the public.

“Brandon had an extremely positive impact on his fellow athletes, particularly in basketball, and exemplified the kind of athlete that we encourage all Special Olympians to be,” said MPS assistant recreation supervisor Jodie Theis.

“Brandon was an amazing athlete and person.

“He was the first person to show up at practices and the last one to leave. Brandon would encourage each person to be better and help others.

“The sportsmanship that Brandon demonstrated was exactly what we strive for all our athletes. He would help with the equipment and if you asked and he was right there to assist you.

“His teammates, friends, and coaches all miss him a great deal,” said Theis.

Brandon was a gentle giant and a friend to everyone. There was not a person he met that he didn't get along with.  He was competitive and liked to win, but that was not the only reason he played sports.  He played so he could make friends and hang out with friends, for the opportunities to show his talents and just work hard.

Brandon had a great smile, but when you first see him he had very serious look on his face.  But within a few minutes he had you laughing right along with him.

Milwaukee Recreation's Special Olympics program is designed for individuals identified as having cognitive disabilities. The program teaches good sportsmanship and responsibility through local, state, national, and international competitions.

Student and adult athletes may participate in several activities throughout the year, including swimming, tennis, bocce, track, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, bowling, soccer, and softball.

Vincent High School, 7501 N. Granville Road, on Saturday, February 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and Sunday, February 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
