MILWAUKEE- Every sport always has its star players, but in the case of Milwaukee King’s Jasmine Meyers, she is more then just a star softball player, she is a class act.
“She is probably one of the best players I have ever coached,” said King coach Duke O'Keefe-Boettcher, who is in his sixth year as coach of the softball team.
Myers will be the first to tell you she does not brag about herself. If she did, she could talk for hours.
The numbers speak for themselves. The junior has an impressive .406 batting average and has slugged out four home runs to go along with 25 runs batted in.
Myers is also a stud on the pitching mound. She is the Generals’ go-to pitcher and so far she has not disappointed. She boasts a 2.97 ERA with 37 strikeouts this season. She has six of the Generals seven wins this season.
“She is so well rounded offensively, defensively and pitching,” said O'Keefe-Boettcher. “She can drive it to all fields and is not afraid to draw a walk.”
Myers however only pitched in non-conference games as a freshman and sophomore because the Generals already had a stellar pitcher in Gina Schliepp. Schliepp was a four-time all conference player and the Generals go-to pitcher the last two years before graduating.
“Our philosophy for non conference games is to take a look at a pitcher who might pitch a lot for us the following year or say a catcher,” said O'Keefe-Boettcher.
In a recent weekend double header against Living World Lutheran, Myers pitched both games. As a result, the Generals won both by a combined score of 29-11.
“Those two games were by far the best games of the year for me pitching,” said Myers. “I just work hard everyday, they tell me I am the best but I know I have to work on things.”
The Generals softball program under O'Keefe-Boettcher has been nothing short of superb. He has won the Zussman Division the past two seasons and four of the last five. Not to mention his team has cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.5 including a 4.0 by senior Claire Mosier.
“Winning the conference my first two years makes me want to keep it going now that I’m older,” said Myers. “I was not sure how good we were going to be this year because we lost a lot of people.”
Myers and her Generals currently sit atop the City Conference at a perfect 4-0 record. They knocked off rival Milwaukee Hamilton back on April 7 thanks to a grand slam by Meyers. The two conference foes will meet again once a make-up date is agreed upon.
If she is not striking fear in opposing pitchers she is studying. Myers has an impressive 3.8 GPA, along with working a part time job. She hopes to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
“I just try really the best I can at everything because I am just scared of messing up,” said Myers jokingly. “My mom tells me to do the best I can.”
