MILWAUKEE - Wednesday night during the Milwaukee Rufus King High School awards banquet, 28 students were recognized for their work at Preps On The Net.

Students received certificates of achievement for articles published on the Web site and for filming and livestreaming events.

Among the students recognized include Kiara Fuller, Vanessa Harris, Lauren Gingold, Brandon Huckeby, Olivia Shaw, Ericka Kelly, Thao Mee Xiong, Eleanor Ryan, Tyler Haanen, Jamita Horton, Mai Xiong, Stephanie Warner, Derrick Johns Jr. and Tyler Haase.

Milwaukee King students awarded certificates of achievement for video included Valencia Smith, Sha' Ron Williams, Alisha Lane, Laisheri Kirkendoll, Phylicia Martin, Cicely Nash Jeronica Brister, Deonte White, Breon Williams, Darnelle Williams, Kentrell Carter, Jada Anthony, Krysta Gray, and Dilana Abanathy.

VANESSA HARRIS EXPERIENCED SUCCESS…

Milwaukee King senior Vanessa Harris had several articles published at Preps On The Net including a piece on how students connect through Facebook.

“I’m always looking at the Journal Sentinel and USA Today in the morning and just to have my own article in print for other people to read was really cool; I thought now even more people are going to see my writing” she said.

Harris who had two other pieces published including a story on the history of Earth Day and another on Exemptions. “Those two stories were published on the front page and it was cool that I was getting my writing out. It really made me seem legit.”

With each story submitted, Harris received constructive criticism from editors at Preps On The Net. She said the hands-on attention really made a difference. “It was encouraging to receive feedback from the editor at Preps On The Net. They told me how well my articles were written and that motivated me to try and keep getting better.”

Harris carries a 3.3 grade-point-average and has taken several International Baccalaureate classes at Milwaukee King including IB math studies and IB English. Harris will attend Marquette University in the fall where she plans on studying journalism.

“If someone is debating whether to write for Preps On The Net I’d say go for it and just do it. Even if you submit it, and it’s not the greatest thing ever, the feedback can help you make it better.  If you just put yourself out there it may turn out a lot better than you thought but you don’t know if you don’t try,” she said.

HIRING STUDENT WRITERS...

Over the last two years Preps On The Net has offered high school students the opportunity become reporters and have their stories published on the Web site.

The articles help promote high school academics and athletics and the opportunity gives students a chance to build their resume and learn how to write for print.

Nearly 15 schools and more than 100 students from across Wisconsin have submitted articles to Preps On The Net. Participating schools include Omro, Lake Mills, Whitefish Bay Dominican, Milwaukee Rufus King, Racine Case, Solon Springs, Slinger, Seneca, Rhinelander, Butternut, and West Bend.

As Preps On The Net continues to grow there will be more opportunities available for high school students. Last year Preps On The Net hired former Milwaukee King student writer Jeremy Lubus who went on to cover conference championships and state tournaments in basketball and football. Lubus also expanded his portfolio, learning to videotape games and provide voice-overs and story introductions.
