Former Milw. King coach Alina Cunningham takes job at Bradley Tech

MILWAUKEE  - Former Milwaukee King girls basketball coach Alina Cunningham is the new girls head coach at Milwaukee Bradley Tech.

“My brother called me Brett Favre,” said Cunningham referencing the former Packer quarterback’s flip-flop on retirement.

Cunningham stepped down just before the start of last season as the General’s head coach saying she wanted to spend more time with her family.

“My five- year-old called me a quitter,” joked Cunningham. “I really did need that one year break but now I’m ready to get back in the game.”

CHANGE DIDN’T SIT WELL WITH CUNNINHAM…

After coaching eight years at Milwaukee King and garnering much success Cunningham announced October 21, 2008 she was stepping down.

“I want to spend time with my kids and it was getting to be a little stressful,” said Cunningham who has four children ranging in age from four-years-old to 11-years old.

Aside from coaching, Cunningham was juggling a full time job as a school counselor at Francis Star and Congress and her husband coaches girls basketball at Milwaukee Madison.

Back in October, Cunningham confidently said she felt she had “earned a break” having taken five conference titles at Milwaukee King along with two trips to the WIAA state tournament.

By Mother’s Day this year, Cunningham felt a change of heart.

“I had far too much time on my hands,” she said. The Cunningham kids also wanted their mom to return to the court. “I thought they were fed up with the basketball schedule of running around and getting home late, but when I told them my former coach wants me to take over Tech, the kids gave me a high five and I was like OK,” said Cunningham with renewed enthusiasm.

Cunningham will take over for Tech coach Kenneth Williams who is retiring after 28 seasons as head coach of the Trojans.

Bradley Tech finished last season 1 – 20 overall and 0-14 in the Milwaukee City Conference.
