MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee City Conference coaches have given an early nod to several potential players of the year.
“If I’m going to pick of my guys I’m going to say Quevyn Winters,” said Milwaukee Washington coach Jay Kenseth.
Winters is a junior and a 6-foot-5 forward that is garnering a lot of interest from various schools including Marquette University.
“I think he’s going to have a great year,” said Kenseth. “He had a fantastic sophomore year and I think he’s gotten a lot better over the summer. He’s been on varsity two years and we’re expecting leadership and big things from him.”
As a sophomore Winters averaged 19 points per game; was selected first team all-conference in the Milwaukee City Conference and was named AP-All State honorable mention.
Milwaukee Washington has five of their top seven players back from last year. “Three starters and two young guys who were sixth and seventh men last season,” said Kenseth. “So we’ve got some good expectations.
Among the returning Purgolders include Jon Cathy-Macklin, Dominque Williams, Terry Taylor and Antonio Mayfield.
“If we can play together, define roles we’re hoping for some pretty good things,” said Kenseth.
Milwaukee King coach Jim Gosz went off the board and selected Milwaukee Hamilton point guard Charlie Lee as his early pick for player of the year.
“He is dynamite, quick, smart and listens to coach Tom Diener,” said Gosz adding he used to coach Lee in seventh grade football.
Looking at his own team this season, Gosz said they still need a lot of work.
“We have a lot of players, I could shuffle the deck on any given night and pull five out and I don’t think we’d miss a beat.
“We’re very erratic right now; we don’t have consistent guard play that carries you at the high school level right now. There isn’t any one certain kid on our team, other than maybe Quintrell Rowe, who has handled the duties so far,” said Gosz who also tabbed Silas Mills Jr. as someone with potential.
Mills made second team all-conference last year as a junior.
“I see these guys every day in practice, we’re just very inconsistent and once we start finding who will settle in at the correct positions we may get better but we may get worse before that,” said Gosz.
Milwaukee South Division coach Ty Moseler looked at the competition as having a lot of talent.
“I think Elgin Cook from Hamilton and I’ll throw a plug in for him,” said Moseler.
“About the only returning senior that was first team all-conference from South Division was Derrick Cook and he’s back and hopefully he will have a productive year.
“Derrick Cook is a very good basketball player. Last year as a junior he led us in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals.
“We have experienced guards back, but we don’t have much size, we have a couple 6-3 kids that play like they’re 6-1 so we have to find ways to keep the game competitive and take it into the fourth quarter and maximize possessions and get kids to scrap and compete against teams that have players that are 6-6,” said Moseler.
The three City Conference coaches recently spoke with ESPN’s Steve Haywood.
