Strong performance by Milw. King leads to victory

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Rufus King girls basketball team pulled off another win Thursday, beating Milwaukee Madison 55-38. ,

Solid rebounding and a strong offense were keys for the Generals (5-0, 9-2) who started off the game a little shaky with missed lay-ups and a lack of focus.

“We had no intensity at the beginning,” head coach Craig Machut said. As the game progressed, the Generals started giving more effort.

Machut also noted that on the bench, the team gives 100 percent of good teamwork and sportsmanship. The team cheers each player when a shot is missed or they make a foul.

Milw. Madison (3-2, 8-4) came ready for a win, with aggressive rebounding, confident free throws and key shots, but after the first eight minutes, their momentum waned.

“We lost our aggressiveness,” head coach Gary Thomas said. As the game continued, the Lady Knights missed several rebounds and had trouble hanging onto the ball.

King took advantage of the Lady Knights missteps. Teresa Buchanan followed every shot and zipped under the net jumping for the ball.

“Definitely rebounding was my strongest point tonight,” said Buchanan who finished with 13 points.

The Generals played like a well-oiled machine as Buchanan passed to Avyanna Young, who scored in the key making a lay-up followed by two free throws. Young led King with a team-high 14 points.

The third quarter was the Generals’ strongest period as sophomore forward Alexis Eckles dropped in 9 points, working the key and making layups with ease.

In the last period of the game the Generals worked their defense. Limiting turnovers, solid rebounding, and free throws are what put King on top Thursday night.

Senior Jasmyne Reynolds remained consistent for King, finishing with 11 points.

For the Knights, senior Lisa Brown scored a team high 14 points and junior Carmen Watson added 13 points.

In the last five seconds, once again the Generals showed good sportsman ship as one of the players held the ball to the very end as a show of respect to the Lady Knights, ending another well fought game.
